Upcoming Conferences

  1. Conference on Transformed and Transformative Ocean Governance

The Chair will co-host the Conference on Transformed and Transformative Ocean Governance, which will be held at the University on 22-24 January 2020.

The aim of this conference is to provide a forum for a wide range of ocean experts and stakeholders to engage with the latest developments impacting on ocean governance from developmental, ecosystem-based and human rights-based approaches, before starting to reflect and give direction on what transformed and transformative ocean governance means and requires.

The Chair hosted and took part in the following conferences and workshops:

  1. Two PescaDOLUS workshops on 13-15 October 2014.
  2. 2014 African Maritime Domain Conference on 9-12 November 2014.
  3. 2014 Africa Integrated Maritime (AIM) Strategy Law Conference on 13-14 November 2014.
  4. 2019 Annual Conference of the African Society of International Law (AFSIL) on 25 and 26 October 2019.          This conference was hosted by the School of Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Durban, South Africa). The Chair was joined by Dr Denning Metuge, a post-doctoral fellow at the University. The theme of the 2019 conference was International Environmental Law in Africa. Prof Vrancken presented a paper entitled "Common Exclusive Maritime Zonesof Africa as an Instrument of Sustainable Development of the African LMEs.
